OK a couple of things that you need to do
I got a NB today with the exact same error and the HDD in is is shot so you should check this out by downloading the HDD makers testing utility and Testing the Drive before doing anything else.
If the time taken to reach the error message is appreciably longer than it would normally be the most likely thing is that the HDD is dead. Not a 100% answer there but a good guide none the less.
Now back to the SATA issue, XP doesn't natively support SATA drives so at the very first blue screen you need to push the F6 Key and wait till you are requested to place a floppy with the SCSI Drivers in the A Drive. At that point you need to insert a Floppy with the SATA Driver for your M'Board copied to the root of the Floppy. You can then load the SATA drives and wait for the Windows setup to reach the option of Installing or Repairing the existing OS. However from past experience I've found that a In Place Install is better than repairing the existing Install so you may consider following these directions
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341
If you wish you can make a Slipstreamed Copy of the XP install Disc with the SATA drivers included by following the directions here

While addressing the adding of SP2 to the Original XP Install Disc you can also add the SATA Drivers for your Computer.
Post back if you need any more information.
