gerard1973 Special user Michigan, U.S.A. 688 Posts | 0 I was going to buy the three volumes of 'The Jinx' by Ted Anneman but then I read somewhere that the 'Jinx' volumes contain the same information as 'Anneman: Life and Times of a Legend' by Max Abrams. I was going to buy both but why should I, if they contain the same information. Is this true? Is one better than the other or do both they contain the same information? Is there a difference? Does someone have both to compare? Thank you. Gerard |
Juan D Elite user 482 Posts | 0 No no, They do not contain the same information. I mean, the Jinx was a publication by Annemann. LATOAL Is a complete biography (including all his written works) of Annemann. Do yourself a BIG favor and buy both! The complete Jinx is available in CD (PDF format) for US$20 And Life and Times is a BIG book that will blow your mind, not only for the effects but the complete history of the man that turned mentalism what it is today! So LATOAL is about US$79 and The Jinx in CD is US$20 For me , it's been some of the best US$99 ever invested! |
Richard Osterlind V.I.P. 2214 Posts | 0 Yes. Although the Jinx contains a lot of Annemann material, it also contains brilliant material by other working performers of the day. Life and Times contains Annemann's material only. Richard PS Practical Mental Effects is great, but does miss quite a bit of great mentalism from the Jinx. |
kamus Veteran user Silver Spring, Md 366 Posts | 0 LATOAL didn't get fantastic reviews when it appeared but it has a lot of great material in it. Some of the ideas are not fully fleshed out in the book which makes it a good place to develop your own personal routines. I was shocked at the amount of brilliant ideas in the book and used one of them to smoke my local IBM meeting. The Jinx also surprised me by the amount of old ideas that have become 'new'. Again, there's a wealth of stuff in there waiting to be rediscovered. The same goes for the 'New Jinx' and the 'Phoenix' which are spinoffs of Anneman's work. il illegetimi est non carborundum http://www.davidkanemusic.com |
Rennie Inner circle I think I have about 2042 Posts | 0 I have both and as everyone stated, they are not the same in any way shape or form.I think both should be in your library though. The Jinx is very similar to Harry Loraynes Apocalpse magazine amd the LATOAL is loaded with Annemann's effects as well as very interesting history of the ENIGMA.Both highly recommended. Rennie The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.... |
Julie Inner circle 3348 Posts | 0 One more observation> The Jinx is a fun read, reletively fast the first time. LATOL is a comparitively slow read due to the nature of the material and writing style--it'll take you a long time to digest--don't plan to read it straight through.. |

Decomposed Eternal Order High Desert 11906 Posts | 0 I just received LATOL yesterday and what a book! This thing weighs a ton. I gave it a quick once over and there is sooooo much information! The pages are of the yellowish type (can't think of a better term) and there are many press clipings and Annemann's personal letters. 90 seconds of pure laughs without a standing ovation! Ken Dyne Inner circle UK 2269 Posts | 0 Life and times is a really difficult read for me, I found it difficult to sit down with (not just because the pure weight of the thing broke my knees) and read, the way it is organsised is just like a note book. Torkova Regular user Astoria, NY 193 Posts | 0 I'm doing research on Bert Reese and was wondering if anyone had any info on him besides the Jinx/PME references. Especially photos or graphics. I have a bunch of the Edison stuff but almost nothing on his exploits in Europe. I know his teacher was Foster who wrote 'The Salem Seer.' Did Foster actually teach him billets or was Reese more inspired and came up with his own ideas? Also, does anyone have any theories as to where Annemann's info came from? In the Jinx, he claims that 'going through my clippings, etc.' but was wondering where he got the details of Reese's handling of billets. Was this just putting it together from descriptions in the newspapers? Reese died in July of 1926. Could Annemann ever have seen him work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Torkova

Lord Of The Horses Inner circle 5410 Posts | 0 SpAgHeTtI, almost all of Al Mann booklets are difficult to find. Some of them pop up on e-bay from time to time (sometimes they're originals and sometmes they're xerox copies) and you should keep an eye for them. Please note that sometimes the prices asked are very high (I believe this is more because of their rarity than any other reason). Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!
Torkova Regular user Astoria, NY 193 Posts | 0 Does anyone have any idea how I might trace where Reese is buried? kbiehler Regular user 165 Posts | 0 Do you know if the Reese billet technique is the same one in Annemenn's book?Kent
Torkova Regular user Astoria, NY 193 Posts | 0 Kent, I don't have the Al Mann book, but as far as I know, the Annemann description is the most detailed I've found to date. I'm curious as to where Annemann got Reese's technique information; whether he just put it togther from news reports or from an eye witness. If anyone has the Al Mann Bert Reese book for sale, please let me know. Thanks, Torkova
kbiehler Regular user 165 Posts | 0 Magicbuilder posted on http://www.Mental-List.com under the heading of Al Mann's Books, that he has all of them and he is in the process of rewriting and updating them. Kent
Torkova Regular user Astoria, NY 193 Posts | 0 Thanks Kent. Will look forward to them if they are re-released. I'm getting some good biographical information about Reese but it all comes in bits and pieces. There seems to be very little other than Annemann, Mann & Cassidy who wrote about his technique in detail. I'm hoping that by putting together published reports of his work that some new light might be shed on what he was doing. Best regards, Torkova

Last Laugh Inner circle Grass Valley, California 3149 Posts | 1 It is mostly a biographical thing, mostly just focusing on the available documents (Edison letters, Crowleys, Houdini's statement, etc.) There is a little bit of technical stuff, but nothing really in depth. Stunninger Inner circle 1339 Posts | 0 This thread inspired me to search for more information on the famous Bert Reese routine. I discovered a complete demonstration and explanation is provided on 'King of the Billets' which I already own. It was great to be reminded I read up on Bert Reese and it was quite fascinating to learn more about him and the success he achieved as a private reader. If you have an opportunity to get 'King of the Billets', it's really good. Long out of print, the DVDs do come up for sale every now and then in the for sale section of the Café.
